Labeled verso "Betye Saar/Grandma's House/Dominique Knowlton Gallery, 19 East 71st St., New York City".

The sculptor and installation artist Betye Saar was born in Los Angeles, where she received a non-art B.A. from UCLA and an M.A. in graphic design from California State University at Long Beach. Her artistic career was strongly influenced by a childhood memory of having watched the sculptor Simon Rodia build his now famous Watts Tower out of the accumulated junk, refuse and debris of his environment. This fascinating and inventive, combined with her discovery of Joseph Cornell's boxes, inspired Saar in her own search for an art of constructed, gathered objects. Her own early boxes were filled with objects that she believed contained the power inherent in natural forces.

Of African, Indian and Irish heritage, Saar imbues her work with a mix of personal, cultural and magical expression ranging from childhood memories and African motifs to works of social commentary, such as 1972's "Aunt Jemima", in which the iconic figure is dressed in black fatigues, giving the "Black Power" salute and carrying a gun. Today Saar teaches in Los Angeles at the Otis-Parsons Institute.
